The game of Chess is complex - but exactly how complex?

Shannon number

The Shannon number, named after Claude Shannon, is an estimated lower bound on the game-tree complexity of chess. Shannon calculated it as an aside in his 1950 paper "Programming a Computer for Playing Chess".[1] (This influential paper introduced the field of computer chess.)

Googol = 10^100

Everyone’s probably heard of a Googol.  A Googol is the name of the number that is expressed as 10^100; the digit 1 followed by 100 zeros in decimal representation:

A Googol:-

10,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,
000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000

That is, there are more ways a game of chess could unfold than there are particles in the universe, so it’s virtually certain that the next game of chess you play will be unlike any other game of chess that’s ever been played, or ever will be played, in the entire, cumulative history of human civilization.

Shannon Numer : 10^123

i.e. add twenty three zeros to the number above

(...that's twenty three zeros more than a Googol !!)

This is probably quite a conservative estimate too!

This composition by Greco uses the theme of the wrong rook pawn:

A POME WOTT I RITT

In Two Knights time we have a match
Time for me a plan to hatch
What will I play, I definitely have black or white
So I must get the opening right
If I play e4 what will he do
No good finishing up in deep doo doo
It'll be a wrench if he plays the French
I might play well or a load of Tarrasch
A pawn prance with the advance could shock him to bits
Or test his wits with a sexy Steinitz
Could be a Sicilian I face on the Morra I suppose
A Najdorf,a Dragon,a Kan,or a closed
Or a cheesy line where he swaps roquefort bishop
No it must be d4 for me
But a Dutch would be too much
I know the Queen's Indian and Prince Philip's from Greece
It would be nice to win an early piece
I need a Scotch,to find a Flohr
Just you watch an easy win I will secure
But wait, could be an Albin,Benko or Slav
Even in defeat I will still look suave
I wouldn't want to look a Ponziani
Or indeed to lose some tempi
So time to go and find Taimanov to contemplate more
I would not want to bore you more

A chess master died - after a few days, a friend of his heard a voice; it was him!
"What's it like, where you are now," he asked.
"What do you want to hear first, the good news or the bad news."
"Tell me the good news first."
"Well, it's really heaven here. There are tournaments and blitz sessions going on all the time and Morphy, Alekhine, Lasker, Tal, Capablanca, Botvinnik, they're all here, and you can play them."
"Fantastic!" the friend said, "and what is the bad news?"
"You have Black against Capablanca on Saturday."
